Starting January this year, the very important Plaintiffs Screening Committee (PSC) will be composed of a new set of members, according to the order issued by Judge Robert Miller of the US District Court for the Northern District of Indiana.
The PSC plays a vital role in the litigation of Biomet hip implant lawsuits that have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in Indiana. With over 900 pending lawsuits, this committee will be given the gargantuan task of representing the interests of these claimants in an effective and efficient manner.
The significance may be demonstrated by the requirements laid down by the court. It asked for a three-page application in which it “succinctly addresses willingness and availability to commit to a time-consuming project, ability to work cooperatively with other attorneys, and professional experience in this type of litigation”.
It may be noted that the committee now comprises a number of new members while there were some who were reappointed. It was also emphasized by Judge Miller that the appointment were personal in nature, which means that assignments are not transferrable to other attorneys, even if they come from the same law firm.
